Gayo Coffee – the Rich taste of the world premium coffee

Gayo Coffee grows on the ancient volcanic area in Gayo Highland. It grew at the altitude of 900 – 1700 above sea level with rainfall rate at around 1,643 – 2,000 mm/year. Gayo coffee is highly favorable for coffee plantations. Gayo Highland is located at the Bukit Barisan or The Ring of Fire. That along Sumatera Island, Indonesia. Located in the central area of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province that covers three regencies, Central Aceh, Bener Meriah and Gayo Lues.

Gayo coffee is one of the charms of Aceh. This coffee is well known not only in Aceh. There are two kind of gayo coffee can be cultivated, they are Arabica coffee and Robusta coffee. Aceh Arabica coffee is a product of the best known. The best part of this type of coffee is one of the best coffee in the world. Gayo coffee flavor is unique and also have good taste and famous in some countries in Europe, Asia, and even America.

Gayo coffee also exported to countries of Europe, Asia, and America. Fragrant aroma and savory taste and bitter is the Gayo’s characteristic. This type of coffee is also got the title as premium coffee. Coffee Gayo is able to compete with other types of coffee in this world.With the success of Gayo Coffee, the market would also have a positive impact for the development of the coffee industry in Aceh. Gayo Coffee Cultivation

The Dutch Colony started the coffee cultivation in Gayoo  island start in 1924. Since 1930, coffee has become the center of Gayo economy that contributes around 50-90% of family income. Currently, Gayo Highland is one of the most important areas for Indonesia’s Arabica Coffee. It is the largest Arabica coffee producing region in the country.

The total coffee plantations in the area covers around 95,000 hectares owned by about 66,000 families of farmers. The local government and private sector controlled less than 10% total plantations. The soil, the landscape, and the climate of the area contribute to various rich characters, strong body and complex flavor of the coffee. Gayo coffee has the rich taste of the world coffees and considered as gourmet coffee. This coffee is often blend to enhance aroma because the strong characters.

Despite the strong character and complex flavor. Gayo Arabica traded for commercial coffee and the small portion for specialty coffee. Several trade names of the coffee in international markets are Mandheling Coffee, Sumatra Mandheling, Retro Mandheling, Sumatra Gayo, Mandheling Gayo, Super Gayo, and Gayo Mountain Coffee. Some of the producers of Gayo Arabica Coffee have certified to the principle of sustainable development system for coffee industry such as: Organic, Fairtrade, Utz Certified, Rainforest Alliance, C.A.F.E. Practices and Bird Friendly in order to meet developed countries market demand.
